This course will revise the content in Core Part II Human Rights using the syllabus principal focus and the five themes and challenges for this part of the HSC Legal Studies course. Students will be given guidance on how to relate the themes and challenges to each aspect of the human rights topic. Human rights will be defined using the five characteristics of human rights. The three formal statements of human rights in the syllabus will be examined. In particular students will be provided with a copy of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and shown how to use this document to improve their responses about human rights in examinations. The course will cover the role of a Charter of Rights for Australia and look at how to successfully tackle questions which ask students to discuss arguments for and against a Charter of Rights for Australia. Specific attention will be given to developing evaluative and analytical thinking skills in relation to human rights which are essential for students who want to achieve high results (Band 6 responses) in Legal Studies.
