It is no secret that Boulder hosts a large number of talented musicians for a town its size. Everything from folk songs to drum-machines constantly swirl around town on a nightly-basis. The downside of this is that it is hard for each musician to make a fair living as the competition drives bar and club owners to shoot for the lowest bid.
What two established Boulder musicians are doing to work in this overrun market is creating a Guitar and Percussion Duo. With Holden Young playing bass parts, chords and melodies and Scott Parker Mast melding different world music drum patterns on top, the group has a very full sound. "I'm a guitar player first," Holden comments, "but over the years I've been singing more and more which gives our group a large volume of instrumentals and vocal tunes." Holden also feels the growing concern about the economy may limit gig money even more. "The economy for music is almost non-existent as it is...most everyone we know works other jobs and has very limited budgets for touring, promotion, merchandise, instrument repairs and basic sound equipment."
With no current recordings the group hopes the list of musicians they have opened for will speak for their experience and talent: JJ Grey & Mofro, Michael Franti, the Motet, Outformation, String Cheese Incident, EOTO, Devotchka, Chris Berry's Panjea, and Aphrodesia.
