Nancy Powell will present a slide presentation of some of the lesser known rural churches in southeastern Minnesota: their histories, their ministers, and their congregations, with a special note of some of the rarely mentioned women who were vital to their existence. Representing a variety of denominations, many of these churches are closed and gone, but at one time each was very important.
Nancy comes from a long line of ministers – fourteen in four generations, including two women. Nancy, however, took a different path. She did her undergraduate work at Nebraska Wesleyan and attended graduate school at the University of Minnesota. From there she was involved in social work for over thirty years, first for the Minneapolis Relief Department and then for Hennepin County as a Senior Social Worker. A genuine independent scholar, she has, among her many presentations, spoken to groups from the Norwegians at Norkadalen in Wisconsin to the Episcopalians in Minnesota, given courses for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Minnesota, and been a featured speaker at annual meetings of county historical societies.
Free and open to the public. Sponsored by the Minnesota Independent Scholars Forum.
