Roman armies invaded Spain in 219 BC but it was not until the reign of the Emperor Augustus that the region was fully integrated into the Empire. The Iberian Peninsula was subsequently divided into three provinces and for the next 500 years would be transformed into an integral part of the Roman Empire. Home of Trajan and Hadrian, the region acquired the trappings of Roman civilisation which are preserved in the archaeological remains: roads, theatres, aqueducts, baths. This course examines the archaeology of pre-Roman Spain, the physical evidence that survives from the Roman Period, and the rule of the Visigoths in Spain.
