"The notion of freedom immediately calls up its opposite," writes Philippe Hurel. The four kinetic and engaging works on the concert address different aspects of freedom and its limits. In Hurel's piece, a muscular motif breaks away from the larger musical framework, like an athlete who seems to defy the law of gravity. Manolis Manousakis honors civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. in a piece for bassoon, electronics, and video. Two unconventional percussion works by Chinese composers round out the program. Academy Award-winner Tan Dun uses water to create unique sounds in a piece for four percussionists, commissioned by the Nature Conservancy. Guo Wenjing's work for three percussionists takes a surprisingly simple setup - just six gongs placed on a small table - and lets loose an exuberant 'Parade' of sound.
