George Schroeder is primarily an abstract painter who also works in collage, which he considers "painting by other means." His approach to both media is entirely improvisatory, creating pieces through a process of continual reaction and revision. Schroeder, an emeritus member of the Hiram art faculty, taught in the art department for over 40 years.
