Hip Hop for The Public June 24, 2011

A full day dedicated to celebrating all things Hip Hop is set to take The Public, West Bromwich, by storm on Saturday 25th June.

Hip Hop Revolution will feature special performances from some of the hottest Hip Hop talent around and will culminate with a mass dance led by celebrity dancer, Turbo which will be open to all.

Hip Hop Revolution is part of Dancing for the Games which is inspired by London 2012 and part of the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands. It has been funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to help build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as Arts Council England and Advantage West Midlands.

The Public will be buzzing with Hip Hop culture featuring workshops in dance, graffiti, DJing, MCing and t-shirt design as well as a screening of the classic Hip Hop film Wildstyle.

Street dance ambassador, Kashmir Leese, is developing the central dance performance with schools in West Bromwich and Walsall and local crews. Together they will take over the whole venue presenting the whole range of underground dance from Breaking to Krumping. Local urban music company Stayfresh will be showcasing their singers and MCs straight after Turbo’s performance and underground dance event Throwdown will be hosting a street dance battle to finish off an action packed day.

Performers will be wearing specially created t-shirts designed by cult streetwear brand SoapBox, whose work will also be displayed at the event.

Turbo, from Davina McCall’s Got to Dance on Sky 1, will be creating a series of moves that people can learn so that they can join in the performance on the day. Hip Hop Revolution launches Dance Routes a year long series of cutting edge underground dance events produced by Punch to celebrate the Cultural Olympiad.

Punch will be running five events over the next year with each representing the one of the five Olympic rings. Hip Hop Revolution will be a daylong party to close BASS Festival 2011 (British Arts and Street Sounds), the UK’s only month-long celebration of Black music and art, organised by Punch.

Ammo Talwar, founder and chief executive of Punch, says: “This event is a must for those people interested in dance, music and urban culture. The day is set to be packed full of entertainment and energy and will be a great opportunity for people to come along to mix with, and even dance with, some of the biggest names on the UK Hip Hop scene.”
