Nestled at the tip of Monmouth County is true New Jersey gem! Almost completely surrounded by water, Sandy Hook is much more than one of New Jersey’s most popular beaches. The combination of beach dunes, holly trees, saltwater marshes, coastal defense ruins, a nineteenth-century fort, and a historic lighthouse make this trip one not to miss. And as per tradition, the group will go out for local eats post-hike.
Register for Hike: Sandy Hook in Highlands, NJ on Eventbrite
Specs:
The hike is classified as easy to moderate.
The total length of the hike will be about 6 miles long and we will walk at an easy pace. The actual mileage may vary depending on people’s interests.
This hike is good for beginners who are in good athletic shape!
The hike should take about 4 hours.
Sweeper:
If the group size is larger than 10, we are going to look for a volunteer to act as a sweeper. Sweepers will walk at the end of the hike line and will make sure the group stays together.
Hike Leader:
David will be leading this hike.
David will not be waiting for late people. In fairness to those who arrive on time, he will be starting the hike on time.
What to bring:
Hiking boots (recommended) and water (required).
Hiking boots will help keep the sand out of your feet when hiking as the trail is a mix of hard surface and sandy surface.
You may want to bring long pants due to some poison ivy close to the trail.
We will stop for a light lunch / snack at the picnic area so we recommend you bring something to eat.
Tickets:
All sales are final. No need to print tickets; your name will be at the door.
Inclement Weather:
Heavy precipitation will cancel this hike; drizzle will not. Please check your inbox for updates and the NJYP.org calendar. Tickets will be refunded.
Directions:
Take GSP to exit 117. Keep left onto RT 36. Follow RT 36 for approx 14 miles until you cross the bridge (you will be able to se the ocean at this point). At the light just after the bridge, make a right onto Hartshorne Drive (construction has been ongoing and the traffic pattern has changed a few times recently so be prepared to make a left at the light if necessary). Follow that until you see the sign for Beach/Lot D just before the visitor’s center. When you turn into the lot for beach D, make a left and go straight to the corner.
