If you have never had the experience of observing a heron rookery, do not miss this great opportunity. Carter Fields, an 85-acre property managed by the Essex County Greenbelt Association on the Boxford/North Andover line, is home to dozens of great blue herons and their offspring. The herons' platform nests sit high in dead white pine trees for a jaw-dropping view. We???ll use field scopes to get a close look at young herons branching out from their nests, while the adults fly by encouraging their young to become independent. Participants will learn about the herons' amazing life history and observe their communal nesting strategy. It's quite the sight to see!
