"Her Rebel Highness", a fully choreographed musical act with three female vocalists, dancers, 18th century costumes, baroque-pop songs and theatrics, makes its debut on Fri., Nov. 13 at J'LaChic Theater 39 at Pier 39 in San Francisco.
The show's central theme is empowerment and founder Velia Amarasingham explains, "A significant part of the inspiration for this piece comes from all of the independent and career-focused women I have met since moving to the San Francisco Bay Area from Sydney, Australia, more than 10 years ago."
This inspiration has evolved into a new production that stars a soul singer, a mezzo soprano and a pop vocalist who take on the personas of rebellious 18th century princesses, determined to break out of their stereotypes and to take control of their destinies. Two modern dancers complete the line-up and to complete the concept, the music transitions from baroque to pop as the princesses reveal more and more of their modern attitudes.
Amarasingham says, "I have made the transition from artist to entrepreneur and attribute my female peers who have set wonderful examples." It's no wonder San Francisco ranks higher than any other American city for women's entrepreneurship, according to the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women.
She adds, "Her Rebel Highness is for all of the avid Masterpiece Theater fans who, like myself, are simply dying to see an 18th century heroine break out of her tiresome state and take charge. We shan't disappoint!"
The evening will begin with guest performances by burlesque dance troupe, Kitty Kitty Bang Bang and magician Heather Rogers.
