In the 1940's, Henri Matisse collaborated with author Henry de Montherlant on a project that interpreted the Ancient Greek tale of Phasiphae and the birth of the minotaur. Matisse provided illustrations for select phrases from each scene of Montherlant's take on the tale. Although only one image per scene was used in the book, the remaining images were published in 1981 per Matisse's wishes.
