Helene Mukhtar exhibits at BAMART with a painting from her East/West Collection April 17, 2008

Helene Mukhtar will exhibit ‘EAST/WEST” #16 at BAMART. The show, organized by the BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) in collaboration with the Brooklyn Art project, will feature a number of emerging Brooklyn artists under the theme “the Collective Unconscious”.
Helene Mukhtar is a mixed media New York artist. Her work is based on paper collages and oil paint on canvas. Born in France, she now lives in Brooklyn and travels extensively. Her photographs are the inspiration for her work. Printed on paper and glued on to the canvas, they become the visual jumping point from where she puzzles out what each piece will be. Sometimes maps, newspapers, pieces of cardboard are used with her photographs. In the series “EAST/WEST”, Mukhtar investigates the visual similarities between western graffiti and images from Pakistan.
“It is a dialogue “, says Mukhtar about her work, “between the collages, the paint, the canvas and myself. I constantly destroy and reconstruct. It is a slow process. Eventually, everything starts falling into place”. This intuitive approach and openness of her creative process allows Mukhtar to end up with a harmony of sometimes disparate collage elements and muscular often geometrical slices of color.
The show will run from April 17th through May 11t h 2008 at the BAM located 30 Lafayette Street, Brooklyn, New York 11205. The opening reception is April 17th from 6pm to 8pm.
