'Hear the Voices Ring,' a Mobile theatrical premiere by Zemula Camphor Bjork, is a historic drama that gives first-hand accounts of the experiences of 12 African-Americans who were once slaves. These former slaves, whose narratives are featured, were interviewed by individuals who were associated with the Federal Writer's Project under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression. All the former slaves portrayed in this production were between the ages of 80 and 101 years old at the time they were interviewed, and each has a story to tell, some rather amusing. A tapestry of Negro Spirituals, sung a cappella, anchor the narratives and are interspersed throughout.
