Originally named the Missa in Angustiis (”Mass in anxious times”), the Mass in D minor is more commonly known as the Nelson Mass – in honour of the British admiral who destroyed the French fleet in 1798 and for whom it was performed two years later. Haydn’s chief biographer, H. C. Robbins Landon, has written that this mass “is arguably Haydn’s greatest single composition.”
