"HARRIET TUBMAN" CD RELEASE PARTY: MARCUS SHELBY JAZZ ORCHESTRA FEATURING FAYE CAROL: Bassist/composer/educator/bandleader Marcus Shelby took on a formidable challenge when he decided to write an oratorio for jazz orchestra about the life of the abolitionist and Underground Railroad activist Harriet Tubman. In his research he discovered that Tubman had “a close relationship with music, work songs and particularly spirituals, which she sang to give messages to other slaves about planned escapes.” Shelby has told her heroic tale in Harriet Tubman, his new Noir CD for which he wrote both music and libretto (his first) and which will be celebrated at Shelby’s Yoshi’s appearance. The lead role in this major new work will be sung by Faye Carol, who’ll be joined by jazz singer Kenny Washington, soprano Jeannine Anderson, and baritone Joseph Mace. 8PM AND 10PM SHOWS.
