Protean composer, jazz innovator Charles Mingus moved beyond Ellington into new realms creating chamber music, large-scale scored jazz works, and extended improvisational pieces. As an 85th birthday tribute, the renowned ensembles, formed in the 1990s, perform in a rare appearance with noted conductor Gunther Schuller. The Mingus Big Band tours extensively in the United States and abroad, and has eight recordings to its credit, four of which have been nominated by Grammys.
