State of Dysfunction: Government Gridlock and California's Broken Dreams
With California struggling to pay bills, raise revenues, and borrow money, politicians in Sacramento are facing an angry public and the possibility of a constitutional convention. Robert M. Hertzberg, former speaker of the California State Assembly, and Dan Walters, political columnist for the Sacramento Bee, will examine obstacles and propose solutions to the state’s financial crisis. Hertzberg was assemblyman of California’s 40th District from 1996-2002 and speaker of the Assembly from 2000-2002. He is now the co-chair of California Forward, a bipartisan state government reform group funded by leading California foundations. Walters has covered the state Capitol since 1975 and is co-author of a new book entitled The Third House: Lobbyists, Money and Power in Sacramento.
