William “Bull” Halsey unwittingly sailed his undefeated Pacific Fleet into a powerful storm that sank three destroyers. Defying orders, Lt. Commander Henry Lee Pledge, captain of the U.S.S. Tabberer, sailed his crippled ship through 70-foot waves and 150-mile-per-hour winds to rescue drifting sailors.
