4:00 PM:

The House by the Cemetery (1981)


From the Godfather of Spaghetti Horror, Lucio Fulci, and presented with the infamously bad dubbing (especially the young boy, Bob). A young family moves from their cramped New York City apartment to a spacious new home in New England. But this is no ordinary house in the country: the previous owner was the deranged Dr. Freudstein, whose monstrous human experiments have left a legacy of bloody mayhem. Now, someone - or something - is alive in the basement, and home sweet home is about to become a horrific hell on earth.

Now folks - Fulci is known for gore. While this one is less bloody than most of his films, do not misunderstand: there's slashing, maiming, beheading, fireplace poker poking, etc. Fulci is not known for plot coherency, and this one does not disappoint! At the same time, dialogue is actually better than in most of his films (at least much of it does serve a purpose in this film), and there is a bit more mystery. Don't expect too much resolution, though, and just enjoy the maggoty ride!

Horror Hotel (1960)


OK, we back off from gore now, for those who aren't so into that. This classic hearkens back a bit to what we opened the month with (Black Sunday), but at the same time, is substantially different and features the iconic Christopher Lee in one of his most threateningly subdued roles of his career!

A college student (Venetia Stevenson) with an interest in witchcraft goes to the Massachusetts town of Whitewood. It's a foggy, spooky town which gets even scarier when Stevenson discovers that the owner of the Raven's Inn, Mrs. Newlis (Patricia Jessel) is in fact a 268-year old witch. Jessel sold her soul to the Devil to regain her life after being burned at the stake. The whole town is her coven. Stevenson's boyfriend and brother arrive to look for her and discover human sacrifices and all sorts of evil goings-on!
