For the tenth consecutive year, New Mexicans have the opportunity to celebrate Halloween the Balkan way, with the exciting and exotic music of Albuquerque’s premier Balkan band, Goddess of Arno. Upbeat dance tunes and traditional songs from Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, Greece and Bulgaria — many in the Romani (Gypsy) style and language — are all part of the repertoire.
Band members sing and accompany themselves on traditional ethnic string and percussion instruments as well as accordion, violin, guitar and electric bass. Veteran folk dancer Patsy Gregory will lead the traditional Balkan line dances and she’ll give a crash course in the basics at 7:30p. When the Balkan Bash officially begins a half-hour later, you can dance your own dance or just sit and enjoy the music and ambiance. The Halloween Balkan Bash will also feature special guest musicians, Halloween decorations and prizes for the best costumes (optional, but encouraged).
