El Dorado Musical Theatre, winner of five consecutive Elly Awards for Best Overall Production of a Young Person's Musical, presents Hairspray. The musical features music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray. EDMT's presentation is directed and choreographed by Debbie Wilson, and vocally directed by Jennifer Martin.
It's 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, where the 50's are out and change is in the air. Lovable, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s.
Show performs at the Solberg Performing Arts Theater on the campus of Folsom High School. Tickets are $12-20 and available online at www.edmt-tickets.com or by calling 916 941 SING.
