London-based journalist and author Haifa Zangana offers critical analysis and inimitable life experience to issues around Iraq, tourture, resistance, and exile. In Dreaming of Baghdad, Zangana lucidly recalls her childhood in Iraq; years of radical activism against Saddam Hussien and the 70s Baath regime; capture and forced exile; and her attempts to keep up hope for her home country. She will be available for in-person interview September 21-24.

Who speaks for Iraqi women? Who speaks for the Middle East? Hamid Dabashi, the Hagop Kevorkian Professor of Iranian Studies and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, joins Haifa Zangana, writer, activist and political prisoner in Iraq in the 1970’s, to discuss their parallel experiences growing up in Iran and Iraq in the same era on different sides of the border, and the complexities of speaking for and about their troubled homelands. Moderated by Sara Pursley, Managing Editor of the International Journal of Middle East Studies.

Join the Feminist Press and Code Pink for an event featuring Iraqi writer Haifa Zangana discussing her memoir, “Dreaming of Baghdad,” in which she recounts her life as a political activist organizing against Saddam Hussein’s tyrannical regime. Subjected to torture, imprisonment, and eventually exile, Zangana pays tribute to friends, family and comrades lost in struggle.
