The third film (and first in color) by Canadian fabulist Maddin remains one of his most impressive achievements. A tangled tale of incest and sibling rivalry is set in a precarious Alpine village (allegorically, Canada) where any sound above a whisper might trigger a disastrous avalanche--an outrageously blatant metaphor for repressed desires that dare not speak their name. Preceded by Maddin’s celebrated short THE HEART OF THE WORLD, a delirious farewell to the twentieth century in the form of a coming attraction for an imaginary Russian silent film.
