Students will consider a variety of paintings, photographs, sculpture, and other art forms studied as visual literacy texts to explore the theme of War and Peace. The course will begin with the students' knowledge about art, art history, or famous artists, such as Picasso. Students will then be shown Picasso's Guernica and asked for their initial impressions of the piece. They will then be provided with background information, and asked how their impressions change when context is provided. As the painting is quite large, students will be assigned to look at one quarter of the painting at a time, writing down all the visual details they see and sharing their findings in small groups with the view to recreating an artwork that represents Guernica and the themes of War and Peace. Students will then create an artwork that represents their feelings about the painting on the large background canvas supplied. Finally, students will use Picasso's Dove symbol to write about his purpose in creating this painting. What did he hope to accomplish and how did he try to do so? The answers to these questions get at the theme of the work. The doves and peace poems are then attached to the recreated painting. This course is suitable for students in Years 5 to 6.
