Independent Shakespeare Co. presents
Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival
After last year’s historic, record-setting, summer season, Independent Shakespeare Co.
(ISC) has grown to be one of the largest free arts festivals in Los Angeles. This year, ISC
returns to Griffith Park with over 40 nights of programming. Audience members will enjoy full
productions of the rarely produced Shakespeare play, The Winter’s Tale; as well as two of his
most popular comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Comedy of Errors. In addition
to the main stage productions, ISC offers other programming throughout the summer with
Players in the Park/Jugamos en el Parque, a pre-show workshop series for families funded
by The James Irvine Foundation; a variety of pre-show lectures on topics related to
Shakespeare; and curtain-raising performances by numerous local musicians and dancers.
ISC has historically attracted an uncharacteristically youthful and diverse theater
audience. Our 2011 audience was: 49% non-Caucasian, 72% under 35 years old (19%
under 18), and 35% earning $25,000 a year or less.
