As part of Les Dames d’Escoffier’s “Green Tables” initiative, members are focusing their volunteer efforts on helping kids understand the importance of eating fresh and healthy seasonal foods, and feeling a stronger connection to the land and local farms. The non-profit organization will present a free Green Kids at Market Day at five area farmers’ markets over the July 22nd and 23rd weekend, from 10 AM to 12 PM each day. On Saturday July 22nd, market days will be held at the Arlington Farmers’ Market at Courthouse Square (www.arlingtonfarmersmarket.com) and two FRESHFARM Markets (www.freshfarmmarket.org), one at 6th and H Streets NE and the other in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland at Fenton and Ellsworth streets. On Sunday, July 23rd, the celebration continues at the Dupont Circle FRESHFARM Market and Takoma Park Farmers Market (www.takomaparkmarket.com) in downtown Takoma, Maryland.
Young chefs enrolled in high school culinary programs will be paired with Dame Chefs to offer food tastings and other kid-friendly activities. Among the day’s activities, kids will have the opportunity to go on treasure hunts through the market, make their own butter and ice cream, build bugs using fresh veggies, enjoy story time and more. Some of the top area chefs and food writers who will be providing kid-friendly cooking demonstrations including Kate Jansen and Tracy O'Grady at Arlington, Alexandra Greeley at H Street, Janis McLean at Silver Spring, Carla Hall at Takoma Park and at Dupont Circle.
