Green is the New Black: Wearable Art Fashion Show March 30, 2008

GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK WEARABLE ART FASHION SHOW ON MARCH 30
IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE
“CONTEMPORARY CRAFT IN BC: EXCELLENCE WITHIN DIVERSITY” EXHIBIT AT THE VANCOUVER MUSEUM

The Vancouver Museum and the Craft Association of British Columbia’s (CABC) invites you to experience the Green is the New Black Wearable Art Fashion Show on Saturday, March 30th at 2:30 p.m. Vancouver Guild of Fibre Arts and FibreEssence Gallery will be presenting a runway fashion show at the Vancouver Museum as part of the Contemporary Craft in BC: Excellence within Diversity exhibit.
Members of the Vancouver Guild of Fibre Arts and FibreEssence Gallery have been given the challenge of creating garments that interpret the green theme in any way the artists choose. Green the colour; a colour which goes with just about everything. Green the concept; recycling as in using environmentally friendly production methods. The fashion show will be featuring over 30 designers who have made one-of-a-kind clothing with an environmentally responsible production method.

Designers in the show include:
Yvonne Wakabayashi uses black interfacing cotton, and traditional shibori (shaping through pleating and folding) methods in her piece called Tsunami Warming/Warning.

Kate Barber, a weaver, is showing a silk skirt coloured with natural dyes, together with a hand woven vest, made using natural dyes.

Toby Smith’s kimono uses natural dyes and resist methods on silk scarves, which are then pieced together to make a beautiful wrap. Natural dye stuffs were grown in Toby’s garden, and the residues from the dye process were recycled through composting.

The show’s organizers have invited students from Kwantlen University College’s fashion program and from the University College of the Fraser Valley fashion arts program to participate in the runway show.

Green is The New Black is being presented with the support of the Crafts Association of British Columbia, and is associated with the exhibition, Contemporary Craft in B.C; Excellence in Diversity, on at the Museum until April 6, 2008. The Contemporary Craft in BC exhibit celebrates the diversity of over ninety BC artisans using mediums of fibre, glass, wood, metal, ceramic and mixed media to create vibrant pieces with West Coast flair. The exhibit is open during regular Vancouver Museum hours: TUESDAY through SUNDAY, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm, THURSDAYS 10:00 am - 9:00 pm, Closed MONDAYS. Tickets are available at the Vancouver Museum, 1100 Chestnut Street in Vanier Park. General admission is $11, students and seniors $9, youth $7, and children’s admission is Free.
