Green Day returns to support the band's first studio album in nearly five years, '21st Century Breakdown.' Emerging from Northern California's underground punk scene, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tre Cool formed Green Day in 1989, building a cult following during the early '90s with albums like '1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hour' and 'Kerplunk.' Their major-label debut, 'Dookie' was released in the spring of 1994, yielding a hit with 'Longview.' Superstars by the the time the singles 'When I Come Around' and 'Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)' became entrenched as Top-40 fare, their punk revivalist image faded a bit, giving the band time to retreat. They reemerged in 2004 with 'American Idiot,' winning two Grammy Awards.
