In recent months, the Obama Administration has unveiled multiple initiatives aimed at tackling the drug cartel problem at the southern border from increased resources border taskforces to money for port of entry enhancements. At the same time, however, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano has issued a temporary halt on workplace raids and other internal immigration enforcement efforts aimed at identifying illegal workers inside the United States. President Obama himself has indicated to several groups that that he plans to take up comprehensive immigration reform this year.
On May 6, 2009, Secretary Napolitano is tentatively scheduled to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the Administration’s immigration enforcement efforts.
