In the post-WWII Siberian wilderness, Russian veteran and train aficionado Ignat (Vladimir Mashkov) is stationed at labor camp Kray among Russians sentenced as traitors under Stalin’s rule for conspiring with Germans in battle. On a mission to recover an abandoned train on an island across the river, he meets Elsa, a young German girl living for years in seclusion. With the challenge of building a bridge back to camp the only option, Ignat gradually drops his guard and develops a relationship with the girl, despite strong national prejudice.
