Synopsys:
After a half-century, Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot remains one of the most important, respected, and powerful plays in the history of world theatre. The play is about the vexations in life of waiting for something without any intrinsic purpose. The play juggles between varied emotions of anger, frustration, hope, hopelessness and despair. It urges man to continue the business of living, of hoping, and of waiting for the ‘godot’. As human beings, we all are caught in the web of life. We wait endlessly for one thing or the other and this waiting forms the basis of hope and in a much larger perspective the basis of life itself. This tragicomedy was voted "the most significant english language play of 20th century". The Malayalam adaptation is based on the translation of the play by the famous Malayalam poet Kadaminitta.
Originally written as a response to World War II, and the subsequent disorientation that followed, the play still has not lost its relevance today in terms of its sheer existential philosophy. This production of Godot tries to focus on the notion of Victims of violence. Everybody in todays life, in one way or other, are victims of violence. It can be due to existentialistic guilt, or due to evils of social life like war, terrorism or day to day life's tensions. Director Nandajan uses multimedia projections interwoven with the play to explore this concept. Another interesting aspect is that, while keeping in tune with the absurdist theme of the play, the Director has ventured to experiment with the casting of Pozzo and Lucky, the master and the slave characters respectively. The roles have been donned by two women thereby breaking the traditional gender specific nature of such roles - contemporary face of power and victim.
The play is produced by Silicon media (www.simedia.in), a name to reckon with among the new genre of film makers. Silicon media's recently produced films include Sufi Paranja Katha | What The Sufi Said (www.sufikatha.com) and Janaki | The Daughter of Earth both directed by National award winning directors. Sufi was selected for competition section of recently concluded International Film Festival of Kerala (2009). Silicon Media is transcending upon the Malayalam theatre space in Bangalore with the announcement of this play, its first theater production. The team behind Sufi project plays a key role in the staging of Godot. Prakash Bare and Manojkumar, the actors of Sufi Paranja Katha, donns the lead roles of Vladimir and Estragen. The play is directed by Nandajan KA, a theater veteran who has directed more than 50 plays in last two decades and was part of the direction team of Sufi.
Silicon media dedicates this production for commemorating Samuel Beckett's twentieth death anniversary on Dec 22nd. Malayalam plays seldom make presence in premier theater spaces in Bangalore, like Rangashankara. Silicon media, with this debut theater venture, is trying to make a difference.
