Discover the history and meaning of the Gospel of Judas in this free lecture by renowned theological scholar Elaine Pagels.

Translated and published for the first time in April 2006, the Gospel of Judas is an authentic early Christian text from the second century. It is the only gospel discovered in the past 50 years, since the sensational discoveries of 50 other early Christian sources in 1945, including the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Mary Magdalene. Pagels examines how, like the other gospels, the Gospel of Judas opens a window on the early Christian movement, showing us sources suppressed for thousands of years and revealing the controversies that engaged Christians during that tumultuous time.

About Elaine Pagels
Elaine Pagels is the Harrington Spear Paine Professor of Religion at Princeton University and is internationally regarded as a preeminent scholar in the theological community. Her research as a young scholar at Barnard College resulted in the publication of her best-selling book, The Gnostic Gospels (1979), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award and the National Book Award and was chosen by the Modern Library as one of the one hundred best books of the 20th century. Pagels is a recipient of Rockefeller, Guggenheim, and MacArthur fellowships, has been profiled in numerous publications, and was a featured commentator on the 2004 ABC special program Jesus, Mary, and Da Vinci. Her publications include Beyond Belief: The Secret Gospel of Thomas (2003), The Origin of Satan (1995), and Gospel of Judas (2006). Pagels's forthcoming book, Reading Judas (co-authored with Karen King), is the first book to illustrate how the newly discovered text explains how Jesus' followers understood his death, why Judas betrayed Jesus, and why God allowed it.
