Further/East Further West presents virtuoso performer Ariel Barnes in Global Pilgrimage, a decidedly exotic solo cello recital featuring premieres by local composers Keon Birney, Elizabeth Knudson, Timothy Pickett and Farshid Samandari.
Global Pilgrimage takes place on June 29th, 2007, 8:00PM at Heritage Hall in Vancouver (Main Street at East 15th). It is a live performance experience in which both the performer and audience members have the opportunity to explore the sounds of various cultures throughout the world, woven together with the traditions of western art music. We will visit Spain, Israel, Iran, India, Russia, and Latin America, as a new generation of composers here in Canada find ways to express our incredibly multi-cultural fabric. The rich and colourful single voice of the solo cello narrates this trans-continental journey.
This performance will feature: Birney’s Dhun Basant, a work that reflects performance practices associated with Northern Indian Sitar music; Knudson’s Yarilo, based on four traditional Russian folksongs; Pickett’s Homage, featuring elements of funky Latin-American groove; and Samandari’s Memoirs Untold, a piece that draws on components of both Western Classical and Persian music.
The programme will also feature La Rosa Variations, a work by Canadian composer Milton Barnes based on a popular melody sung in Spain by Hebrew people who spoke the Spanish dialect Ladino. It was written on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Jews expulsion from Spain in 1492.
The Further East/Further West concert series is a production of Vancouver Pro Musica that aims to involve diverse cultural communities in contemporary music making and provide new opportunities for BC composers to create intercultural music.
