It is regarded the most beautiful German western ever made.
Despite its emotionalism this film manages to get by on little dialogue and shows an intense feel for scenery.
Trenker probably adapted Blaise Cendar’s “Gold”, in which the life of August Sutter is recounted.
Sutter established his agrarian empire in the Sacramento Valley, until it was destroyed by gold fever.
What remains at the end of this almost iconographic film –quite untypical for its time – is a feeling of futility
