Ghalib Ke Khat is Pierrot’s Troupe’s latest production. With this, the troupe becomes a distinctive producer of three plays on Mirza Ghalib. The other two being – 1) the much-celebrated Ghalib & 2) the country’s longest running comedy Ghalib in New Delhi

Ghalib Ke Khat is a dramatic presentation of personal letters that the great poet and person Ghalib wrote to his friends, disciples, relatives and even government authorities. .

But, what is “so unique” about the play? Or, what is “so incisive” about this production that the Pierrot’s plays are always characterized for? Well! This time around you are not going to watch Ghalib reading or writing his letters. You, instead, have the addressees of these letters reading them out. Hence, the audience will be introduced to a good number of leading literary lights and public personalities of Ghalib’s era – for the first time.

Moreover, the play has someone anchoring it. No, not an MC: It is rather Ghalib’s much forgotten wife – Umrao Begum – literally the one at the “receiving end” of Ghalib’s penchant and passion for letter writing,

Ghalib was a prolific writer of letters. In fact, he was a “Man of Letters” in the truest sense of the word. His more than 800 letters do not only provide a unique insight into his life and life style, but are also a running commentary as well as a telling comment on day to day socio-political as well as cultural affairs of one of the most turbulent periods of Indian history – much of the 19th century.

The play uses a good number of these letters to the above-mentioned effect; painting, in the process, an “ordinary man of extraordinary wit and intelligence” and portraying an era that actually marked the end of an era and the beginning of another

The play is presented by about 12 reputed actors from Delhi and Mumbai, including the one and only TOM ALTER, whose impeccable command over Urdu as well as over the finer points of drama & diction will enable us to present Ghalib’s letters the way Ghalib intended them to be -- conversational and communicative.
