September 11-October 27, 2012; Artist reception Friday, September 14, 5-8pm
Gerald Slota, whose entire artistic oeuvre has focused on imagined secret histories and subliminal narratives, often begins work on a new photograph with a sketch in one of his many journals. Any given page might include cut up black-and-white photographs (either Polaroid, contact sheets, or both), masking tape, written notes, drawings, scraps of paper, and strokes of green and gold from his use of darkroom chemicals to sketch when a pencil isn't handy. Slota's creative endeavors in photography speak not only to our zeitgeist but also to our physical relationship with the medium. The aesthetic vernacular of a Slota photograph, marked and torn, references an age when photographs were a formal reality in our daily lives. At this point in photographic history then, it should come as no surprise that the materiality of the photograph might be addressed in the work of many artists who, like Slota, straddle an analog/digital border in their artistic practice. This exhibition explores both Slota's process and his artistic projects. Featured are a selection of photographs, many of them unique, from six different bodies of work as well as a selection of Slota's journals. This is Slota's first solo exhibition in the Bay Area.
Gerald Slota has exhibited his work internationally since the 1990s at institutions such as George Eastman House, Rochester, New York; SF Camerawork; Langhans Galerie, Prague, Czech Republic; Recontres D Arles, France; Ricco-Maresca Gallery, New York; and Robert Berman Gallery, Los Angeles. His work is included in collections at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and the Whitney Museum of Art in New York. His photographs have appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, BOMB, Blindspot, Art in America, and Aperture. Slota teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York and lives in Paterson, New Jersey.
