UNM Continuing Education offers you a tour to New Mexico’s own Supervolcano - Valles Caldera! The one day tour will depart from UNM Continuing Education at 1634 University Blvd. NE on Friday, April 9, 2009 at 8am, returning at 5pm. The visit will focus on the geothermal system of the volcano. We will visit the Soda Dam hotspring, which has deposited a beautiful travertine dam along the Jemez fault and discuss how the fault controls the flow of geothermal fluids. Then, we will visit Sulfur Springs where there are acid hotsprings and fumaroles. Here, volcanic gases reach the surface from deep within the volcanic system to form acid hotsprings and gas vents. We will discuss geothermal energy, volcanic gases, interesting mineral deposits, and the beneficial and not-so-beneficial aspects of soaking in hotsprings. The $82 fee includes travel, tour guide, and a boxed lunch. For more information visit dce.unm.edu/story-of-new-mexico.htm or call Joan Cok at 277-0563. To register visit dce.unm.edu.
