Gene Kelly had a hit on Broadway with Pal Joey before becoming the major musical star at MGM in the 1940s and early 1950s, with classic films such as The Pirate, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, Summer Stock - and the three films he co-directed with Stanley Donen, On the Town, Singin' in the Rain (the best movie musical?) and It's Always Fair Weather. He also appeared in an eclectic collection of dramatic roles, in films as diverse as Christmas Holiday and Inherit the Wind. We will examine his career in detail, screening three features in full and many excerpts. Details of this event may be subject to change.
