Dr. William Lipsky will be reading at Books Inc in the Castro from his newest book: Gay and Lesbian San Francisco. In recent years, San Francisco has been synonymous with gay and lesbian pride, and the various achievements of the gay and lesbian community are personified in the city by the bay. The tumultuous and ongoing struggles for this community's civil rights from the 1950s to the present are well documented, but queer culture itself goes back much further than that, in fact all the way back to the California gold rush. Through both private and public collections, this local author has documented and captured the most extensively illustrated history of gay and lesbian San Francisco to date.
Highlights of Gay & Lesbian San Francisco:
· First pictorial history of gay and lesbian San Francisco to cover 1848-present and the Gold Rush to the Great Depression
· Filled with vintage photographs, illustrations, and memorabilia, many never before published
· Showcases past vaudeville performers and eminent authors
· Shows images of past and current gay and lesbian civic leaders, such as Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin
