Gallery in the Garden: Place and Space November 30, 2011

Sherway Gardens’ current Gallery in the Garden exhibit entitled Place and Space features pieces by artists Angela K. Lynch, Doug Mays and Michko Wrye that highlight the natural beauty of landscapes. Landscape painting is an exploration of the phenomena of natural scenery – mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, forests and nearly always, the sky. The artist’s brushstrokes can evoke for the viewer the mood and the memory both of the particular location and of the universal qualities of nature.
Etobicoke artist Angela K. Lynch has painted with and learned from a number of accomplished and admired Canadian and American painters. Beginning in watercolour, Angela found the translucency and flow of paint and water along with the unexpected and unpredictability of watercolour made it both an exciting and challenging medium. Now with the desire and curiosity to explore new territory, she is currently working in acrylic and hopes to expand her landscapes onto paper, wood and canvas as emotional statements and expressions of how she sees nature. Angela is a member of the Humber Valley Art Club, the Toronto Watercolour Society and an associate of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, Toronto. She has won several awards in juried exhibitions, and has displayed her work in Nuit Blanche, the University of Toronto Faculty Club, Lynch Group of Companies, and was guest instructor at the NFPA Conference in Laguna Beach 2010. Stoney Creek artist Doug Mays has a unique, impressionistic painting approach which he attributes to the influence and inspiration of the works of John Singer Sargent and the teachings of Edgar Whitney. Doug graduated from Mohawk College in Architectural Technology in 1971 and went on to have a successful business career in the Hamilton area until 2002. An award-winning artist at the early age of 10, Doug studied art through high school and following graduation he pursued further studies with several well-known Canadian and American artists. Doug is an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour and is a past President of the Central Ontario Art Association and spends much of the year instructing in watercolour in Canada, Mexico and Europe. Toronto artist Michko Wrye’s main interest is realistic landscape painting. He is a devotee of past masters such as Sydney Laurence, Edward Wesson, Edgar Payne, Andrew Wyeth, John Carlson, Thomas Hill, William Keith, Albert Bierstadt and Ted Lambert. Michko's love for nature’s beauty led him to travel and live in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Maine, California, Colorado, Grand Canyon and the Rockies.
