Innovative, energy efficient technologies in the automobile sector can help to lead the way out of the environmental damage and the global addiction to oil.
The fact is that oil reserves are on the decline, as are natural gas and coal. Nobody knows precisely when, but one day, these resources will have ebbed away.
At the same time mankind’s energy requirements are growing. It seems only sensible to look around for alternatives, before it’s too late.
But, what technologies will shape our lives in the future and will be the most promising?? Is it biofuel, diesel, hybrid or hydrogen?
How can we design our vehicles to meet the next generation’s needs?

Germany and California have long been renowned for their leading role in environmental regulation and the enforcement of strict emission control.
They demonstrate that governments together with industry can tackle the problem of climate change, while ensuring the mobility of society and future generations as well as avoiding political conflicts stemming from the thirst for oil.

As part of our scientific series CURRENT CONDITIONS, FUTURE PROSPECTS the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles will host experts from German auto makers, the German Ministry of the Environment, the Art Center College for Design, and a representative of the Governor’s office to tackle the question if the car has a future and what it may look like.
Leslie Kendall, chief curator with the Petersen Automotive Museum (who also curated the new permanent exhibition “Alternative Power”) will give an introduction to the history of alternative energies in automobiles.
