Funk Future: Firme, Ill Again, and Inner City Soul
In ?Funk Future?, Locus Arts and Galeria de la Raza co-present Firme (San Jose), Ill Again (Los Angeles) and Inner City Soul (Los Angeles) -- three award-winning bands that fuse hiphop, ska, funk, reggae, spoken word, rock, soul and Latin music. ?Funk Future? is the San Francisco premiere for Ill Again?s and Inner City Soul?s new albums released this spring. Coming from multi-ethnic backgrounds, including both the Latino and Asian American communities, what these young musicians share is fearless eclecticism that draws on the richness of multiple musical heritages. This openminded approach has garnered Firme a California Music Award (1999), Inner City Soul a slot touring with Ozomatli, and Ill Again several L.A. area awards.
Locus Arts is an all volunteer-run organization dedicated to supporting emerging Asian American artists. In January 2004, the three-year-old Locus Arts moved in with Mission District Latino arts gallery and nonprofit Galeria de la Raza. ?Funk Future? is the first joint event by the two organizations and highlights inventive young Latino and Asian American musicians.
