Your negative characterization of octal notation saddens me. :< Octal is useful for things like Unix file masks and literal representations of memory addresses on architectures with 18 or 24-bit memory busses, such as IBM System/360. You see it all over the place in the Unix V6 source code.

I have mixed feelings about octal file modes, but that's pretty much the only modern use of octal!
