In 2007, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Coast Survey originally charged by Thomas Jefferson to provide a "complete and accurate chart of every part of the coasts" of the United States. As part of this celebration, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and NOAA have produced a special poster exhibit: 'From Sea to Shining Sea: 200 Years of Charting America's Coasts.' This 20-poster set explores the Coast Survey's history, accomplishments, and scientific contributions - richly illustrated with photos, charts, and artwork held in the Survey's archives.
