In celebration of Houston Grand Opera’s world premiere of the oratorio, Song of Houston, musicologist Nancy Gisbrecht Bailey will explore the intriguing world of opera. Arguably the most collaborative of art forms, opera brings together instrumental and vocal music with literature, dance, theater and the visual arts to create a complex and often beautiful expression of emotion. Participants will get a look at opera from its beginnings in late 16th-century Florence through its modern expressions. The works of Mozart, Verdi, Puccini and other composers will be examined as well as opera’s close cousin, the oratorio. The final session will include guest appearances by Song of Houston composer Christopher Theofanidis and lyricist Leah Lax.
