Friends of the High Line Presents: Beyond the High Line: Transforming New Orleans October 15, 2012

New York, N.Y. (Tuesday, September 25) - Friends of the High Line is pleased to continue its popular lecture series Beyond the High Line with a public talk about the work New Orleans is doing to plan for more green spaces that coexist with water adaptively reuse spaces throughout New Orleans, including the Lafitte Corridor, a three-mile disused shipping canal and railway that once connected the New Orleans’ French Quarter to Bayou St. John, on Monday, October 15 beginning at 6:30 PM within the semi-enclosed passageway on the High Line at West 14th Street.
Presented by Friends of the High Line in partnership with the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and The Trust for Public Land, the talk will feature Friends of the High Line Co-Founder Robert Hammond in conversation with Jeff Hebert of the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority and David Waggonner of Waggonner & Ball Architects. The Honorable U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA), who is the champion for progressive water management in Louisiana, will introduce the speakers.
A Q&A and reception featuring the Baby Soda Jazz Band will follow the presentation. This event will be the fourth lecture in the Beyond the High Line series, following public talks earlier this year about Chicago’s Bloomingdale Trail, Detroit’s Dequindre Cut, and Manhattan’s Lowline.
“The High Line gets a lot of attention, but it is just one of many examples of ways that communities are working together to transform old, industrial infrastructure into public space. We look forward to bringing some of the country’s most innovative thinkers to New York City, and giving them the High Line as their platform to present their big ideas and talk about the latest updates with their projects,” said Robert Hammond, Co-Founder of Friends of the High Line.
“I’ve always looked to the High Line as an excellent example of reclaiming under-utilized urban space and infrastructure. I look forward to sharing our collective vision for these two projects in New Orleans while building on the lessons we’ve learned from the High Line and other projects internationally,” said Jeff Hebert, Executive Director of the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority.
Beyond the High Line is presented by Friends of the High Line in partnership with the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and the Trust for Public Land. The series is made possible by the New York Community Trust—LuEsther T. Mertz Advised Fund and, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with support from Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
