Johanna Vargas? New York Debut Is A Feast For The Senses:
Honey & Oranges: works in oil and copper
Arena Studios, known for their daring and provocative exhibitions of female-centric, multicultural and erotically charged fine art, is proud to present Honey & Oranges: works in oil and copper by Johanna Vargas, on view October 21st, - November 21st, 2005.
Honey & Oranges marks the New York debut of a Mexican artist whose work has been steadily pursued by collectors in the Chicago area. Ms Vargas' clientele of collectors is as varied as her creations, ranging from attorneys and restaurateurs to social service and advocacy centers.
Ms. Vargas' experiences as a Mexican-American woman and mother deeply influence her work, with depictions of fiery dancing Latina women and children at play alongside richly textured abstract imagery. A tremendous amount of motion and passion are captured in her oil paintings. Primary themes of feminine freedom and family are showcased with bold use of color and texture. The senses are both awakened and soothed by the scent of beeswax and orange oil emanating from the works. Viewing Ms. Vargas's work is an intimate and sensual experience. The opening reception will enhance that experience, featuring performances by Dragonfly, Sara Murphy and vocals by Ivonne Santiago, champagne and chocolates will be served.
The first exhibition of Johanna Vargas' Honey & Oranges will take place on Friday October 21st, 8-10pm at Arena Studios' SoHo gallery (407 Broome St #7A, between Centre and Lafayette Streets), admission: $15.
Private viewings are available October 22nd-November 21st by appointment only. Please call 212-219-9276 for further information or visit www.arenanyc.com/events.htm.
