Friday Nights at the de Young: Cultural Encounters
Celebrating Bouquets to Art and For Tent and Trade: Masterpieces of Turkmen Weaving
Forum: Good, Better, Best
Friday, March 14, 2008, 5:00–8:45 pm
The third season of Friday Nights at the de Young Museum continues. On March 14, the galleries come alive with the 24th Annual Bouquets to Art. The museum will display nearly 150 floral arrangements by prominent Bay Area designers and garden clubs. The arrangements interpret and complement the museum’s exciting collections. The evening’s art activity allows visitors to create their own floral arrangements and sculptures using pipe cleaners and tissue paper. The museum also spotlights the exhibition For Tent and Trade: Masterpieces of Turkmen Weaving with a forum entitled, Good, Better, Best. This panel on Turkmen carpet connoisseurship presents a lively discussion from 3 different points off view (collector, curator, dealer) on what makes a carpet great versus merely good. There are docent tours of the special exhibition, Gilbert & George each Friday at 7 pm. The program on March 14 features Turkish music by Deli Kanli, 6:30–8:30 pm; Forum: Good, Better, Best, 7:00¬–8:30 pm.
All galleries are open until 8:45 pm. Cocktails are available in Wilsey Court, and the de Young Café serves a special dinner menu, drinks, and appetizers on Friday Nights. A $5 surcharge applies for non-members to visit the galleries for this week of Bouquets to Art. Admission includes access to all festivities including live music and interactive art projects.
