Thursday, October 22 – Sunday, October 25
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, October 23, 2009 – 6pm to 9pm

The Newark Arts Council is sponsoring “Freestyle” a group exhibition of emerging artists active in the city’s art scene. The exhibition will be on view through October 31st at the National Newark Building, 744 Broad Street at the corner of Commerce Street. The show demonstrates the vibrancy of Newark arts through the inclusion of artworks that address a multiplicity of ideas by participating artists. The variety of media on display will further celebrate Brick City’s diverse artistic heritage. “Freestyle” is part of The Newark Arts Council’s 8th Annual Open Studio Tours.
Jeanne Brasile, exhibition curator, is also the Gallery Director at Seton Hall University’s Walsh Gallery. She is active in the Newark art scene as both a curator and artist. Asked about her process in selecting art and artists for the exhibition, Brasile remarked, “My goal in producing this exhibition is to highlight the artists and the art that have contributed to Newark’s ongoing reputation as a locus of art and culture.” “Freestyle” is a celebration of this fabulous city and the people that love it.”
The Newark Arts Council was created to advance and expand the artistic and cultural resources of the City of Newark, New Jersey. They are located at 17 Academy Street. For more information about the Open Studios event or the Newark Arts Council, please contact them at 973-643-1625.
