Freedom to Create, a new exhibition showcasing barrier-breaking works by artists from the most socially intolerant and repressed regions of the world, will open at the Ana Tzarev Gallery, located at 24 West 57th St, New York, NY 10019, on Friday, March 25.
The exhibition features works from the 2010 Freedom to Create Prize, an annual award that celebrates the courage and creativity of artists around the world, and is a physical manifestation of how creativity is being used to affect social change around the world. It addresses the importance of empowering dreams to transform lives and celebrates the power of the arts for confronting barriers to creativity and prosperity. The works bring messages of courage, unity, strength, reconciliation, healing, and hope from around the world to new audiences.
Speaking about the exhibition, Ms. Priti Devi, Vice President and spokesperson for Freedom to Create explained, “We focus on regions where there is the greatest need to change mindsets and build capacity to fight intolerance and conflict. The Freedom to Create Prize celebrates the courage and creativity of artists around the world who use their talent to promote social justice and inspire the human spirit.”
Freedom to Create opened at the Cairo Opera House in November 2010, and the Ana Tzarev Gallery in New York is the first stop in a worldwide tour. Works range from installation art and sculpture to paintings, photography and music, and are sourced from around the world including Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Myanmar (formerly Burma), Rwanda, Georgia, Iran and Colombia.
The exhibition is free and will remain open for public viewing through April 23, 2010. For more information, please visit http://www.freedomtocreate.com/Prize-Events.asp
